Beginning in 1945, the Bread of Life Rescue Mission has occupied space in the Matilda Whitehill Block (1889-1890). A landmark, mid-century, neon sign hangs from the building's exterior. This portion of Pioneer Square near Skid Road on Yesler, had a high proportion of single-men and bars for most of its history. Alcoholism and homelessness have been chronic issues.
