Building History

The Bakersfield Opera House opened in 1906, and operated under this name until 1924, when it was rechristened the "Nile Theatre."

The theatre closed operations in 1994. Its interior has been remodeled and it re-launched as the Nile Bar and Grill in 07/2006.

Building Notes

The Nile Theatre, at 1721 19th Street, was in operation nearby to the Rex Theatre at 1305 19th Street in 1938. (See Bakersfield, CA, City Directory, 1938, p. 737.)

Alteration

A fire c. 08/13/1914 consumed 80 seats of the Bakersfield Opera House, and damaged much of the interior.

A remodeling occurred in 1927 to the Nile Theatre.

Los Angeles architect S. Charles Lee remodeled the Nile Theatre's interior and added a marquee to the exterior.

The theatre's single auditorium was closed by mid-02/1976 and divided into two. As a twin theatre, it reopened by 03/26/1976. (See Cinema Treasures.org, "Nile Theatre," accessed 04/14/2017.)
