Building History

The Mechanics' Institute was founded in 1854 and has occupied a number of buildings in San Francisco during its existence. According to the organization's web site, it had an educational role from its beginning: "Founded just after the Gold Rush to provide technical education and training for mechanics and to promote local and California industry, the Institute today is a vibrant intellectual and cultural center serving the entire Bay Area." (See "Mechanics' Institute," accessed 09/04/2009.)

The Mechanics Institute Pavilion #1 stood at Market Street and 8th Street between 1874-1881.

Building Notes

The Mechanics' Institute Pavilion #2 was used as a makeshift hospital after the Great Earthquake of 1906.
