Heavy rains caused the flooding and closure of a stretch of Interstate 5, I-5, between mileposts 68 and 89, 30 miles south of Olympia, WA. As much as 10 feet of water flooded the roadway. This closure impeded car and truck traffic between Seattle and Portland; approximately 54,000 vehicles used this stretch of highway per day, 10,000 of them trucks. During this five-day (12/03-12/07-2007) closure, traffic was re-routed via a detour which made the usually 170-mile trip 440 miles instead. On Tuesday, 12/11/2007, crews from the Washington State Department of Transportation were still fixing a stretch of I-5 between 77.00 after Exit 76 to Milepost 83.75 before Thurston Lewis County Line.
