This was the second floating concrete bridge completed in Washington after the Lacey V. Murrow Bridge, built in 1940. Construction started 01/1958 and finished 08/12/1961 at a cost of $26.6 million. The structure was named for William A. Bugge, (1900-1992), Director of the Washington State Department of Highways from 1949 to 1963.

In 1998, A Washington State Department of Transportation survey indicated that 14,915 trips were made per weekday and 18,759 trips on per day on weekends.

A new east span of the bridge was being tested on 09/11/2008 and 09/12/2008 to see if it would match up with the existing west portion. Plans were made to float the new eastern section into place between 05-06/2009; the bridge closed on 05/01/2009 and was set to reopen 06/06/2009 following the $500 renovation effort.

The west half of the Hood Canal (Bugge) Bridge sank in 02/13/1979. The west-bound replacement cost $143 million and opened 10/25/1982.
