The owners were was a UCLA professor and his wife, who created a house for themselves and 8 rental apartments in one. Emphasis was placed on maximizing the view of the nearby UCLA campus.

The 8 apartments measured about 900 square feet each, and all had their own terraces. The interior had no load bearing walls, as the floors and roofs were carried on steel beams themselves supported by concrete columns. Lautner used this structural system for resistance to earthquakes and resilience to wind. Ramps led to each apartment, not stairs.
