Personal

Relocation

Charles Francis Dean was born in Belton, TX. A biography published in G. Walter Reed, History of Sacramento County, California With Biographical Sketches, (Los Angeles: Historic Record Company, 1923), p. 518, traced out his early years: "Charles F. Dean enjoyed both the ordinary grammar school and the high school courses of instruction, and then spent three years at the Agricultural and Mechanical College at Bryan, Texas.... The next two years he spent in San Antonio, Texas, and after that, seven years in Chicago, following his profession; and then in 1908, he came out to California, and entered the state service as chief designer of the state architect’s office—a position of peculiar responsibility and some opportunity, which he filled with eminent satisfaction until 1922, when he resigned."

Unfortunately, the chronology sketched out in Reed's book does not work out as described. If Dean started in college at the Agricultural and Mechanical College at age 18 in 1902, he would have left the school in 1905. It then indicated that he spent two years in San Antonio (taking him to 1907), and then spent another eight years in Chicago, IL. That would take him to 1915. What is known is that Dean graduated from what became Texas A & M University in 1904 in Civil Engineering. (See Texas A & M University.edu, College of Architecture, "Charles F. Dean Memorial Scholarship," acccessed 03/14/2019.) He then moved to Chicago, IL, where he joined the Chicago Architectural Club in 1905. (See Nineteenth Annual Exhibition of the Chicago Architectural Club MCMVI, March Twenty-Ninth-April Eighteenth, [Chicago: Munro and Southworth, 1906], n.p.)

Dean lived in Sacramento by at least 1910, working as a draftsman in the CA State Engineer's Office. According to the 1910 US Census, he resided as a lodger in a building on the 700 block of L Street. He moved frequently in his early years in Sacramento, living at 1525 K Street in 1912 and at 602 11th Street in 1913.

Dean and his wife resided at 1325 40th Street in Sacramento, CA, from at least 1920 until 1926. James S. Dean lived nearby at 1351 40th Street in the latter year. (See the Sacramento, California, City Directory, 1924, n.p., and Sacramento, California, City Directory, 1926, p. 185.) In 1930, the Deans resided at 2221 Markham Way in Sacramento. Dean's residence had a value of $11,000, easily double the cost of the average house in California at that time. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1930; Census Place: Sacramento, Sacramento, California; Roll: 187; Page: 5B; Enumeration District: 0094; Image: 163.0; FHL microfilm: 2339922, accessed 10/11/2016.) The Deans continued to live at 2221 Markham Way until at least 1953. (See the Sacramento, California, City Directory, 1953, p. 179.)

He died in Sacramento County, CA, at the age of 72.

A younger brother, James S. Dean (1885-1962) worked with him in a practice called Dean and Dean from about 1922 until 1932.
