The California Death Index indicated that William Henry Armitage was born on 01/16/1860. According to Harold Kirker, he was born in Sheffield, England, although Kirker listed his birthdate as 1861. Also according to Kirker, he arrived in CA in 1883. According to 1896 Oakland, CA, voter records, Armitage resided at 2129 Clinton Avenue. This document indicate that he became a naturalized American citizen on 08/10/1892 in San Francisco, CA. As noted in the 1910 US Census, William Armitage's wife was listed as the household head, and he was not listed living with his family at 1321 Octavia Street in San Francicsco. Alice Armitage did not work, but Victoria had a job as a milliner and Ralph had a position with city government as a draftsman.

Armitage died of pneumonia at San Francisco Hospital following a stay of two weeks. At the time of his death on 01/30/1944, Armitage lived at 2026 Broderick Street, and was a widower. He and Alice Batkin had a daughter Victoria Alice Armitage (born 06/20/1884 in Oakland, CA-d. 1976-07-05 in Monterey County, CA) and a son Ralph William Armitage (born 04/06/1886 in San Francisco, CA-d. 01/29/1966 in Santa Barbara County, CA). During her lifetime, Alice worked as both a milliner and a bookkeeper. Ralph W. Armitage became an architect, like his father.

Biographical Notes

Oakland voter registration records listed Armitage as Caucasian with a light complexion, blue eyes and light hair. He stood 5-feet, 7-inches tall at age 35.
