Overview

This gable-roofed, Colonial Revival residence would have been stylistically au courant when it was built in 1895, and was erected by a family of some means. Its relatively simple form and restrained color and ornamentation would have contrasted notably with Queen Anne houses of the same era. In 2021, it contained eight bedrooms and was operated as an inn, known as the "De La Vina Inn."

Building History

In 1900, the lawyer Henry Pease Starbuck (born 03/20/1851 in Nantucket, MA-d. 08/08/1918 in Santa Barbara, CA) and his wife Charlotte Puffer Baxter (born c. 07/1853 in MA-d. 05/22/1927 in Santa Barbara, CA) lived in this residence with their two children, John Austin Starbuck (born 09/22/1887 in Orange, NJ-d. 07/03/1957 in Las Vegas, NV) and Edward Baxter Starbuck (born 11/23/1892 in Nantucket, MA-d. 07/30/1949 in Santa Barbara, CA). He was a partner in the law firm of Canfield and Starbuck from at least 1904 until at least 1915. (He was not listed as a partner in the Santa Barbara, California, City Directory, 1917.)

The Starbucks lived at this address from at least 1900 until about 1907. Thereafter, they moved to a dwelling at 326 Junipero Plaza, on the southwest corner of of Junipero Plaza and Laguna Street. (See Santa Barbara, California, City Directory, 1913, p. 193.)

John Pease Starbuck lived in Santa Barbara according to CA voter records, although it is not known if they resided in this house. Building Notes

It is not known if Henry Pease Starbuck was related to the architect Henry Fletcher Starbuck (1850-1935). Both men were from Nantucket Island, MA, so the likelihood is that they were at least acquainted with each other, if not related.

Like his father, John A. Starbuck also became a lawyer.
