Shortly after the Seattle Fire of 1889 that wiped out most of the city's commercial district, Donald E. Frederick (d. 1937), a migrated to Seattle, WA, from GA in 1890. drawn by its business potential in the rebuilding process. Soon after coming to town, Frederick met an old friend, James Meacham, who operated a plumbing supply and used furniture business in a one-story, false-fronted shop on Front Street (later renamed 1st Avenue) near Pike Street. Seeing that business was brisk, Frederick produced $500 to partner with Meacham in the business. Just after this, a new employee, Nels Nelson (d. 1907), joined them. Frederick and Nelson bought out Meacham that first year; they gradually expanded their inventory to include a range of second-hand goods. Due to this expanded inventory, they sought larger quarters in 1891, and found a site in the former Queen City Furniture Store, then unoccupied, at 1213 2nd Avenue.
