"As architectural consultant to the California State Office of Economic Opportunity, his firm is designing, building and evaluating 17 temporary communities for such [migrant] families. The two aspects to this migrant master plan are, he explained: 1.) providing a system of coordinated social services in the community setting; 2.) making sure the facilities do not justify an economic system that should end. Van der Ryn said that an important part of all environemntal problems is to find what needs to be 'designed' and what needs to be left to the user to take care of himself. He noted that this is particularly true in housing where people want to express themselves through their homes." Van der Ryn spoke at the 98th AIA Convention in Denver in 1966.
