Notes:
In the Smith House Ellwood was able to create a most dramatic vantage point for viewing the coastal city lights and ocean to the south by designing living areas at street level. The house is a T whose horizontal faces the street and acts as a screen to the vertical, which contains the living and dining areas. On the lower level, within the space frame, a master bedroom suite will be added. This was Ellwood's first building in which an awareness of Mies Van der Rohe was apparent: the symmetry and the freestanding kitchen are certainly Miesian.
