Kirk worked in Indianapolis, IN, between 1972 and 1976, working for several firms including Woollen Associates, later known as Woollen, Molzan and Partners. For these various firms, Kirk assisted with "historic theatre renovation and medical, retail, office, and housing projects." (See email from Christopher Kirk to the author, 12/06/2018.)

Kirk also worked on the interior design of the Bassetti architectural offices at 2021 3rd Avenue. He was the Project Architect for the Frye Art Museum Expansion/Renovation, serving on the team that produced the museum's architectural program and schematic design. He was also the Project Architect fpr the Seattle Post-Intelligencer Building renovation. According to Kirk, this work included "Renovation for the Seattle PI headquarters building to create rentable office and retail space because newspaper no longer filled its building. John Christopher Kirk was born in Indianapolis, IN, in 1948.

He attended the University of Arizona in Tempe, AZ, between c. 1968 and 1972.

Kirk obtained his earliest architectural experience in Indianapolis, IN, where he worked for four years, between 1972 and 1976. He relocated to Seattle, WA, in 1976, employed first by Charles Kober Associates' Seattle office. (Kober developed a practice first in Los Angeles, CA.) Kirk spent seven years working for the Seattle architect Fred Bassetti (1917-2013) in his various firms between 1978 and 1985.

The architect matriculated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Cambridge, MA, during 1985 and 1986, graduating with a master of science in real estate development in 1986.

He has lived and worked in Seattle since the mid-1980s.
