Professional History

Résumé

Draftsman, Los Angeles, CA, 1916.

Principal, Charles M. Hutchison, Architect, Los Angeles, CA, 1918- 1919. In 1918, he had an office in Room #1405 of the Hibernian Building, Los Angeles.

Associated Architect, Walker and Eisen, Architects, Los Angeles, CA, 11/1919-1921. This association lasted just after World War I, when Hutchison left to work on his own. Walker and Eisen went on to have a successful career on their own. A note in the American Architect and Architecture stated in its issue of 12/17/1919: "Albert R. Walker, P.A. Eisen, Charles M. Hutchison, associated architects, of Los Angeles, Calif., have formed a partnership for practice under the firm name of Walker and Eisen." (See "Personal," American Architect and Architecture, vol. 116, no. 2295, 12/17/1919, p. 763.) Apparently, the partnership arrangement did not suit Hutchison, as he left the firm shortly after joining. A note appeared in the Southwest Builder and Contractor in 07/1921: “Archt. C.M. Hutchison, formerly associated with the architectural firm of Walker & Eisen, has engaged in independent practice. His offices are located at 427 Security Bldg.” (See “Personal and Trade Notes,” Southwest Builder and Contractor, 07/15/1921. p. 11.)

One project done during Hutchison's time with Walker and Eisen was for the Southern Counties Gas Company in Santa Monica. “Architects A.R. Walker and Charles M. Hutchison, 1402 Hibernian building, are preparing plans for altering a storeroom on Third street, Santa Monica, into an office for the Southern Counties Gas Company. There will be new interior office partitions, flooring, plumbing, lighting fixtures, the front will be changed and office fixtures installed.” (See “Building Alterations,” Southwest Builder and Contractor, vol. 53, no. 9, 02/28/1919, p. 11.)

Architect, E.R. Bowen, Los Angeles, CA, 1937. (See Los Angeles A-L, California, City Directory, 1937, p. 987.)

Principal, Charles M. Hutchison, Architect, Los Angeles, CA, 1921- c. 1955. Between 1923 and 1939, at least, Hutchison had an office at 108 West 6th Street Room #1123 in 1924. (See Los Angeles, City Directory, 1924, p. 13.) In 1939, the city directory of that year listed the room as "1132." (See Los Angeles, California, City Directory, 1939, p. 1044.)In the summer of 1923, Hutchison relocated his office space. A note in the Architect and Engineer stated: "Architect Charles M. Hutchison has moved his offices from the Security Building to suite 1123, Central Building, Los Angeles. (See "With the Architects," Architect and Engineer, vol. 74, no. 2, 08/1923, p. 110.)

Hutchison had an office at 2008 West 7th Street from at least 1948 until 1955. (SeeLos Angeles, California, Telephone Directory, 1948, p. 518 and American Architects Directory, 1956, George S. Koyl, ed., [New York: R.R. Bowker Company, 1955], p. 266.)
