Born in CA's state capitol of Sacramento, CA, Frank Veach Mayo spent his childhood in that city. They had a dwelling at 1010 12th Street in Sacramento, CA in 1896. His paternal grandfather, Eli, listed in Sacramento voter records of 1896 as a "capitalist," lived next door at 1012 12th. Eli Mayo, arrived in the US c. 1850 and was naturalized in Sacramento on 08/01/1854. The US Census of 1910 located his family at 3112 3rd Street, Sacramento, CA. According to that year’s document, four people lived in the household, Frank, his younger brother, Joseph, and his parents Pamela and Joseph C. Mayo.

He attended the University of California, Berkeley (UCB), c. 1909-1914, before relocating to Stockton, CA, where he set up an independent architectural practice. Mayo resided at 1023 North Sutter Street in Stockton in 1916. The 1920 US Census located Clara and Frank at 1024 West Flora Street in Stockton, an address they would remain for over 60 years. In 1940, Frank and Clara Mayo had his brother, Joseph, staying with them at 1024 West Flora Street. (See Stockton, California, City Directory, 1940, p. 207.)

Parents

As noted above, the Mayo Family had deep roots in CA. The 1860 US Census listed his grandparents, Eli Mayo (born c. 1827 in England) and Mary Mayo (born c. 1828 in Ireland), lived in Sacramento, where he was a pound-master, taking care of stray livestock, and she worked in a saloon. His grandparents had four children by 1860, Henry Mayo, (born c. 1853 in CA), Sarah Mayo, (born c. 1855 in CA), Gracie Mayo (born c. 1858 in CA), and his father, Joseph Eli Mayo, (born c. 11/1859 in CA).

In 1870, Eli had switched to working as a carpenter in Sacramento. The 1870 US Census recorded that Eli owned about $5,000 worth of real estate in 1870, and had a personal estate of $300. A next-door neighbor, Lucius Powers, a Vermont-born, liquor merchant, had a personal estate worth $42,000, a significant sum at the time.

Frank Veach Mayo's mother was Pamela Veach, (born c. 1871 in CA), who managed the household. She had two sons, Frank, and Joseph Mayo (born c. 1895 in Stockton, CA).

Joseph Eli Mayo, Frank's father, was ten older than Pamela and worked in 1910 as a sign painter, operating his own business.

Spouse

He wed Clara A. Mayo (born c. 1896 in CA) before 1917. Her father came from MI, her mother, English-speaking Canada.
