Personal

Relocation

John T. Burkett was born in Maine, c. 1822, and likely moved to California by the 1850s. The 1860 US Census, contained a record for a "John T. Burkitt" [sic], a carpenter, who lived in a multiperson dwelling, likely a boarding house, in San Francisco, CA. There were a number of building trades workers living here in addition to Burkett, one of whom, Oscar E. Learmond, was also a carpenter originating from Maine. Burkett married Mary A. Robinson in 1859, but no mention was made on the census form of her presence. A brick mason neighbor in this boarding house was named John Robinson (born c. 1837 in NY), perhaps some relation to his wife. (See Source Citation Year: 1860; Census Place: San Francisco District 7, San Francisco, California; Roll: M653_68; Page: 1431; Family History Library Film: 803068, accessed 06/22/2022.) The 1860 Census listed his age as 23, which does not align with his age at his death. Either the 1860 Census was incorrect, or this possibly could have been another John T. Burkett. Given the corresponding place of birth, Maine, it seems more likely that the census taker got Burkett's date of birth wrong. In 1861, Burkett lived on the northeast corner of Kearny and Vallejo Streets in San Francisco. (Seethe San Francisco directory for the year commencing September, 1861, p. 84.) This city directory listed only one "John Burkett" living in San Francisco at the time.

He lived in San Jose, CA, by 1870. He and his family were quite prosperous at that time, with John reporting owning $5,500 worth of real estate and possessing a personal estate of $21,000. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1870; Census Place: San Jose, Santa Clara, California; Roll: M593_88; Page: 303A, accessed 06/22/2022.) In 1872-1873, San Francisco City and County voter records listed a "John Burkett," a mechanic born in OH c. 1837, as having registered. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation California State Library; Sacramento, California; Great Registers, 1866-1898; Collection Number: 4-2A; CSL Roll Number: 42; FHL Roll Number: 977097, accessed 06/22/2022.) By this time, John T. Burkett had moved to San Jose, where he lived with his family.

By 1880, Burkett dwelled at 53 Julian Street in San Jose. He resided here with his wife Mary and their children Charles, Maynard, Clara and Harry. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: San Jose, Santa Clara, California; Roll: 81; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 242, accessed 06/22/2022.)

He died in Woodland, CA, on 09/09/1890 and was buried at the Oak Hill Memorial Park in San Jose, CA. According to his burial permit, Burkett died of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 68. At this death, the burial permit listed his occupation as "farmer." Spouse

His wife was Mary A. Robinson (born c. 1840 in Saint John, NB, Canada-d. 01/28/1897 in Woodland, CA). They wed on 04/28/1859. (See Ancestry.com, Source Information Ancestry.com. Sacramento, California, U.S., Sacramento Bee Newspaper Obituaries, Marriages, Births, 1859 [database on-line]. Lehi, UT, USA: Ancestry.com Operations Inc, 2001, accessed 06/22/2022.)

After John's death in 1890, she wed Frederick Sanderson (born 03/11/1830 in NY-d. 04/23/1915 in Riverside County, CA) and remained with him for the last seven years of her life. Her youngest son with John Burkett, Harry, took Sanderson's surname name..

Children

He and Mary had the following children: Charles E. Burkett (born 1849-d. 08/16/1870 in Bisbee, AZ), Katie L. Burkett (born 1853-d. 03/26/1869 in CA), William Maynard Burkett (born 09/1869-d. 02/03/1904 in CA), Clara B. Burkett (born 1869-d. 08/02/1887 in CA), and Harry Burkett Sanderson (born 07/27-1876-d. 12/23/1951 in Santa Barbara, CA).

The 1880 US Census indicated that Charles worked for a railroad at that time. (See Ancestry.com, Source Citation Year: 1880; Census Place: San Jose, Santa Clara, California; Roll: 81; Page: 3A; Enumeration District: 242, accessed 06/22/2022.)
