The Architectural League of New York picked O'Herlihy as one of its eight "Emerging Voices" in the architectural profession in 2004. Recipient, American Institute of Architects (AIA), Los Angeles, Firm of the Year Award.

He came from a family of visual and performance artists. His father was actor Dan O'Herlihy (1919-2005); uncle Michael O'Herlihy (1928–1997) worked as a director; his siblings included actor Gavan O'Herlihy and the MA-based painter, Olwen O'Herlihy Dowling.
