Ernest worked as an insurance salesman for Woodmen of the World from at least 1928 until 1930, while Martha worked in the home. In 1941, he was an attendant at a state hospital near Phoenix. Hal Shinn's obituary stated: "Hal's successful professional career over the years included the position of Vice President of Engineering & Construction at Emporium-Capwell, SF 1966-1990; Vice President of Facilities for Carter Hawley Hale, Los Angeles; Vice President of Facilities, Store Planning and Construction, Silverman's Jewelers of El Paso, and later for Samuel's Jewelers of Austin.
