Biographical Notes

According to his obituary existing on the SF Gate web site, Holt had a mechanical bent, and was fascinated with machines and how they worked. It stated: "Mr. Holt was an accomplished carpenter, electrician, photographer, mechanic and hot rod enthusiast, and the proud owner of a restored 1941 Dodge. Tinkering with man-made objects was a passion, and he once said, "Anything held together, however firmly, with nuts and bolts seems self-evidently to be made for taking apart and reassembling." This interest in machines had some reflection in the firm's overt emphasis of technology in some of its designs, most notably the UCLA Chiller Plant.
