Both Coxhead and his brother Almeric were bachelors at this time and their place of residence remained San Francisco. The San Mateo house was used as a second dwelling until Ernest Coxhead moved there permanently ca. 1903. The motivation behind its construction may well have been to advertise the firm's work in hopes of securing commissions in Burlingame Park and other fashionable suburban developments nearby (Longstreth 1998:160; 379 n.15).
