This building was used by the Drama Department until 1984, when it was closed down due to asbestos and fire safety problems.

In 1938, University of Washington Theatre Arts Professor Glenn Arthur Hughes (1894-1964) obtained money from the Works Progress Administration (WPA) to create the Showboat Theatre on an existing steamship moored at UW frontage on Portage Bay. Opened in 09/1938, the Showboat could accommodate a 220-person audience.

Demolished; the Showboat Theatre was torn down in 04/1994.
