Yahoo, like Microsoft Corporation, erected a large 170,000 square-foot data center in Quincy, WA, taking advantage of the city's fiber-optic cabling, low cost of power, and inexpensive real estate prices. Computer equipment and cooling units used a great deal of electricity, and local hydroelectric projects in the area kept prices of energy very low, about 8 times less than the national industrial average.
