King County maintained some offices in this building c. 2007.

Architect C.R. Aldrich designed the Central Building in the immediate aftermath of the San Francisco Earthquake and Fire of 04/18/1906, that leveled much of the city and forced the evacuation of a good part of its population. Cities on the West Coast, prone to earthquakes adapted their building codes quickly to ensure adequate seismic strength. While earthquakes were more infrequent in the Puget Sound area than CA, they were not unknown. (Scientists had not yet discovered the region's potential for massive subduction quakes.)
