William H. Weeks designed 22 Carnegie-financed libraries in California, almost a third (seven) of which were executed in the Neo-Classical Revival Style. This library functioned for 65 years before it was replaced. The Gilroy Museum took over the building in 1976.

The Carnegie Foundation of New York granted the Oakland Public Library $10,000 in 1906.
