Philanthropist and seed farm businessman Linwood Wheeler (d. 1944) endowed this combined assembly hall, civic center and armory in 1940; this Streamlined building cost $60,000 to erect.

An article in the West Coast architecture magazine, Architect and Engineer, indicated in 1938 that the civic auditorium in Gilroy, CA, would cost $70,000. A Public Works Administration (PWA) grant was sought to start construction.

Roofing work was done on the auditorium in October 2006.
