The first garden was installed in 1995, but had deteriorated by 2005. Varey served as Dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Planning from 1982-1992, and was killed, along with his wife, Mary, in a helicopter crash in Mexico in 1994. Undergraduate students in landscape architecture designed the garden under the guidance of Associate Professor, Daniel Winterbottom. The garden was dedicated on 06/03/2006.
