Julia Morgan and her mentor, Bernard Maybeck, designed this gymnasium to replace an earlier Women's Gym designed by Maybeck in 1899. Morgan and Maybeck had both executed residential designs for the Hearst Family.

Hansen/Murakami/Eshima Architects supervised a renovation to the gymnasium's interior in 1996.
