General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, (b. Monterey, CA, 07/07/1808-d. Sonoma, CA, 01/18/1890), military governor of the northern portion of Alta Calfornia, constructed this dwelling in 1850-1851; because of Vallejo's stature as an early military and political leader, this house became California State Historic Landmark Number Four, purchased by the state, c. 1933; the name "Lachryma Montis" referred to a spring providing water to the settlement of Sonoma, CA;
