Building History

In 1871, the State Teacher's College relocated to San Jose from San Francisco, away from the distractions of the state's only big city; completed in 1871, the first California State Normal School in San Jose, a four-story, Second Empire Style building, lasted just eight years; it had a grandiose appearance with a projecting portico and mansard-topped central tower. A larger building with a similar projecting portico and mansarded belltower took its place.

In 1874, Charles H. Allen served as the Principal of the State Normal School in San Jose. He lived at 560 3rd Street in 1874. (See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1874, p. 27.)

Demolition

A fire destroyed the California State Normal School Building #1 on 02/10/1880.
