Kump designed a huge complex of buildings, some of which were separated from the main grouping by a large thoroughfare; a tunnel under the road was created to join both campus portions; all buildings were of concrete construction and had glass walls; the cafeteria also operated as a community center;

The American Institute of Architects bestowed an Award of Merit on the San Jose High School in the schools, K-12 category in 1954. The award was given to Ernest J. Kump, Jr., James D. Fessenden, and Delp W. Johnson.
