Building History

Other main library locations preceded this location, but this was by far the most extensive of the early efforts. The cornerstone for the library was laid on 02/17/1902. The structure was finished 06/06/1903 by contractor, F.A. Curtis. Curtis was listed in the San Jose, California, City Directory, 1893, (p. 691) as a brickwork contractor.

The San Jose Library was sold to the San Jose / Main State College in 1936, which used the facility as a student union. A new public library, designed by San Jose architect Ralph Wyckoff (1883-1956) in 1935 and completed by 1937.
