Overview

This was the first California State office building produced using the design-build method, in which the state contracted with a single entity that served as both designer and builder. It was erected on Block 225 of the Capitol Area East End Complex, on the Capitol Mall in Sacramento, CA. The building also set new standards for the energy efficiency of State of CA office buildings.

Building Notes

According to the Fentress Architects.com web site in 2019, the California Department of Education, Headquarters Building became a model of energy conservation: "It became the world’s largest LEED NC 2.0 Gold state office building in 2003, and only the second LEED Gold building in California at the time. Three years later, the building achieved LEED EB Platinum – the second largest in the world. Its design stresses conservation inside and out, from underfloor air delivery systems and photovoltaic technology integrated into the building façade, to a plant-based pest management system that controls unwanted insects. The Fentress team worked with manufacturers to create materials with high recycled content and low chemical emissions, integrating more than 100 sustainable design solutions into the design for an annual savings of $185,000 in energy costs alone." (See Fentress Architects.com, "California Department of Education Headquarters," accessed 08/06/2019.)
