Building History

San Jose State College students voted in 11/1963 to pay an extra fee that was to be pooled to pay for a new student union building. The architectural magazine, Architecture/West, stated in its issue of 01/1965: "Chosen from among five firms recommended by an architectural advisory committee, the Office of Ernest J. Kump Associates, Palo Alto, will design the student union building at San Jose State College." (See "Commissions," Architecture/West, vol. 71, no. 1, 01/1965, p. 9.) Construction on the 144,000-square-foot building was begun in 1967 and completed by 10/1969. (See San Jose State University.edu, "History of the Student Union," accessed 04/24/2019 and Annual Report 2017-2018 Student Union, Inc. of SJSU, [San Jose: SJSU, 2018], np, accessed 04/24/2019.)

Alteration

The architectural firm of Perkins + Will, renowned for their university buildings, was selected to renovate and add to Ernest J. Kump Associates' original student union. Partners Nick Seierup and Jeff Stebar were the architects leading the Perkins + Will design team tht completed its work in 2016.
