Portland, OR

Builidng History

In 1886, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) of Portland, OR, had rooms in the building on the northeast corner of 1st Avenue and Salmon Street. (See R.L. Polk and Company's Portland City Directory, 1886, p. 472.) It maintained an assembly hall, reading rooms and gymnasium on the upper floors of this building. The YMCA did not appear in the city directory of 1885, suggesting that this branch opened in either later 1885 or the following.
