Overview

Partners B.B, Harlan and George A. Bane were both transplants from the Midwest, the former from Chicago, IL, and the latter, Ottumwa, IA. They migrated to the San Diego area c. 1910, and became active in local real estate circles. They decided to establish a hotel, perhaps to house prospective land buyers visiting town. The hotel as constituted c. 1915, had two parts: a two-floor portion facing onto Prospect Street, and a three-story wing behind it. A balustrade lined the parapet of the rear building. Both buildings were of wood-frame construction, making them a substantial risk for fire, a particualr hazard for hotels.

Built History

Co-owners of a La Jolla real estate company, Bert Browne Harlan (born c. 04/1869 in IA)and George A. Bane (born 10/1866 in OH- d. 1935 in San Bernardino County, CA), commissioned San Diego architect Richard Requa (1881-1941) to design this hotel c. 1912. The hotel opened at 902 Prospect Street in La Jolla, CA, on 02/01/1913. Harlan opted out of the hotel partnership c. 1920, and Bane went on to operate the business for the next fifteen years.

Demolition

The three-story wing of the Colonial Hotel #1 was razed, but the two-floor portion was relocated to the west on Jenner Street, next door to the Little Hotel by the Sea.
