In 1881, the Hansford Block had street frontages at 11-29 California Street and 114-132 Market Street.

Overview

The three-story Hansford Block Market was in operation in San Francisco, CA, c. 1881. At this time, many wholesale grocery businesses operated there. Some of them included: F. Daneri and Company, a business operated by Francisco Daneri and Henry Casanova, who were importers and jobbers of wines and liquors and operated a wholesale grocery business. This was located at 27-29 California Street. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1881, p. 279.) Neville and Company, owned by George H. Bryant and Mrs. S.A. Neville, that manufactured bags, tents, and awnings, and imported bags and bagging materials. They also served as San Francisco agents for the Cable Flax Mill of Troy, NY, the Russell Mill, producer of cotton duck fabrics, and Mermaid Seine and sail twines. Neville and Company operated at 31-33 California Street and 16-30 Davis Street in 1881. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1881, p. 709.) Wellman, Peck and Company, a firm run by Bela Wellman and Mrs. Jane E. Peck, importers and wholesale dealers in groceries, tobacco nad cigars. They had two locations in 1881, at 126-132 Market Street and 23-25 California Street. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1881, p. 963.) Root and Sanderson, an enterprise owned by Elliot M. Root and George H. Sanderson, that imported and jobbed groceries and provisions. Root and Sanderson maintained two locations, one at 122-124 Market Street, and the other at 19-21 California Street. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1881, p. 810.) Under the name "John Taylor and Company," John and Henry B. Taylor imported druggists' and chemistry glassware and assayers' materials at two locations, 116-120 Market Street and 15-17 California Street. (See San Francisco, California, City Directory, 1881, p. 910.)
