Overview

The Los Angeles architectural firm of Preston and Seehorn submitted an entry into the competition for a new San Mateo County Courthouse in 1907. (See "Submits Plans for New Courthouse at Redwood City," Architect and Engineer of California, 03/1907, p. 90.) Architect Jasper Newton Preston had achieved success in competing for courthouse commissions in the 1880s in TX, having designed those for Cameron County in Brownsville (1882) and Bastrop County in Bastrop (1883).

Building History

According to the Architect and Engineer of California of 03/1907, a small group of architects submitted plans for the new San Mateo County Courthouse: "Six plans have been submitted in competition for the new court house at Redwood City by the following architects: Martens & Coffey, Glenn Allen, McDonald & Dean, Diamond W. Mohr [sic], Will D. Shea, all of San Francisco, and Preston and Seehorn of Los Angeles. No selection has been made as yet." (See "Among the Architects: Redwood City Courth House," Architect and Engineer of California, vol. VIII, no. 2, 03/1907, p. 90.) The competition was eventually won by Glenn Allen. "Diamond W. Mohr" was actually Normand W. Mohr.
