Overview

This was the second building utilized by the Union Iron Works in San Francisco, CA, situated on the northeast corner of 1st and Mission Streets.

Building History

According to an advertisment appearing in the The San Francisco Directory for the Year 1858, [San Francisco: Henry G. Langley, 1858], (p. 113), the Union Iron Works was established in 1849. The advertisement's text provided some detail about its core business: “The above Establishment has been in successful operation for the last seven years, during which time new and extensive Buildings, have been erected, and the latest improvement added to the Works, which enable the undersigned to supply all demands for machinery and castings of every description, on the shortest notice, and finished in a style of workmanship that cannot be surpassed.” The advertisement listed its mechanical specialties which included “steam engines built and repaired, quartz mills, saw mills, threshing machines, horse powers, grist mills, gearing, malt rollers, and all kinds of mill work, steamboat repairing, blacksmith, etc. Besides the extensive assortment of machinery patterns, attention is called to the new and beautiful designs for Building Castings, Iron Fronts and Columns for Stores, Railings for Balconies and Stairs, Door and Window Sills, Stair Cases, etc.” (See "Union Iron Works advertisement," The San Francisco Directory for the Year 1858, [San Francisco: Henry G.
