The Bank of San Jose stood at 293 Santa Clara Street in 1870.

Building History

The Knox Building opened c. 1866, and housed the private banking enterprise of Dr. William J. Knox (1820-1867) and T. Ellard Beans. Knox and Beans served as a private bank until 01/31/1868 when it became a state-licensed, public entity, known as the "Bank of San Jose." In 1870, the Bank of San Jose had an address of 293 Santa Clara Street. (See San Jose City Directory, 1870, p. 148.)

The Bank of San Jose operated in the Knox Building until 1872, when a new Knox Building was built on the northwest corner of 1st and Santa Clara Streets. The Bank of San Jose was located on the northeast corner of 1st and Santa Clara in 1874. (See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1874, p. 125.)

Building Notes

Notary Eugene W. Aram had his office in Room #6 of the Knox Building in 1874. (See San Jose City Directory, 1874, p. 27.) In the same year, lawyer W.C. Kennedy had his office in Room #11 of the Knox Block, George F. Baker, attorney, rented Rooms #14-15, and Dr. F.W. James had Room #13.(See San Jose City Directory, 1874, p. 77, p. 29, and p. 73.)

The architect, Levi Goodrich, (1822-1887), leased Room #20 of the Knox Block in 1874. (See San Jose, California, City Directory, 1874, p. 123.)
