William J. Dodd, one of the architects of this second Uplifter's Club Clubhouse, helped to found the organization along with filmmaker Hal Roach, author, Frank Baum, and businessman and prominent political conservative, Harry M. Haldeman, in Rustic Canyon at the site of an old forestry station. The site was chosen for its isolation as a place for parties and trysting.

The previous Clubhouse, for this organization of Los Angeles's elite, burned in 1922;
