Desmond Muirhead, Incorporated, designed the Mission Hills Golf Community as well as Bay Meadows in Jacksonville, FL, and Boca West in Boca Raton, FL. The first residential phase of Mission Hills included 250 units. In 2013, Mission Hills had the following resort amenities: three golf courses; a 17-acre golf practice facility with an all-grass driving range, a short game area and four putting greens; two bocce courts; 34 tennis courts on three different playing surfaces--grass, clay and hard court; croquet on 10 lawns; a 17,000-square-foot spa and sports center equipped iwth fitness equipment and a Kinesis wall; 21 meter lane pool complex. Mission Hills operated three golf courses: Muirhead's Tournament Course opened in 1970; the 6,834-yard Arnold Palmer course, designed in 1978; the 6,955-yard Pete Dye Challenge Course completed in 1988. Approximately 125 golf courses operated in the Coachella Valley in 2013, the highest concentration anywhere.
