This railroad trestle allowed Seattle, Lake Shore and Eastern (SLSE) Railway trains to approach Downtown Seattle just above Elliott Bay. This railroad was an effort by Seattle investors to create a rail line out of Seattle that could traverse the Cascades and move east to Spokane and other cities.
