Building History

The Twohy Building was built by T.S. Montgomery and Judge John Twohy (1854-1927). Twohy moved to San Jose, CA, in 1905 and conducted business of his Twohy Brothers Construction Company for ten years there. Twohy Brothers constructed many rail lines across the Far West. He had many business interests, including the National Bank of Spokane, Spokane, WA, Portland Trust Company, Portland, OR, and, after 1917, the Pacific Car and Foundry Company, with plants in Portland, OR and Seattle, WA. The site of the Twohy Building later was occupied by the Headquarters of the California Apricot and Prune Growers Association. San Jose architect William Binder designed 5-story office/commercial building, completed in 1917.
