In its prime, the copper-mining city of Kennett, CA, supported 40 taverns for thirsty miners. The onset of World War I greatly increased the demand for copper, and the town's mining and smelting capacity increased; post-war, however, the demand plummeted, leaving Kennett in precarious financial condition. Mines closed and the town dwindled in size until it was required to disincorporate in 1931, due to lack of inhabitants.
