According to architectural historians Sally Woodbridge and Roger Montgomery, the Washelli Cemetery was created when the Seattle Cemetery on Denny Hill was closed in 1885. Remains from the Seattle Cemetery were transferred to Washelli. Lakeview Park (later renamed Volunteer Park) was created in 1887 from some of this land.
