Building History

Huntington Beach opened its first public library in 1909, spending its first four years of existence in various commercial buildings in the central business district. In 1913, it petitioned the Carengie Corporation to obtain a $10,000 grant for the construction of a new, purpose-built library. The architectural firm of Tuttle and Hopkins obtained the commission and produced an eclectic Neo-Classical and Romanesque design for the building. They worked with building contractor W.D. Lambert of Long Beach, CA.

This building functioned from 1914 until 1951, when a new library was erected at Triangle Park, later known as the Main Street Branch.

Demolition

The Huntington Beach Fire Department burned the old library to train new firefighters in 1965.
