Overview

Planners for Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition located the Administration Building just to the north of the Main Entrance on 15th Avenue NE. This I-shaped headquarters building occupied land later utilized by the University of Washington's Henry Art Gallery.

Building History

Administrators of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition (AYPE) used this building before and during the fair. Afterwards, it was utilized by departments of the University of Washington.

The University of Washington Music Department occupied the AYPE Administration Building until 1927. The Music Deparment relocated to the AYPE New York Building (and later the UW President's Residence) in 1927, opening up the space.

Between 1927 and 1937, the AYPE Administration Building served as the home of the Department of Architecture. Architecture moved from cramped quarters in the attic of the Education Building (now Winlock Miller Hall). This department moved to the former Fine Arts Building of the AYPE in 1937, sharing it for some years with the Physiology Department.

Building Notes

This building stood on a partially exposed basement story, making it a 2 1/2-story building. It had a tripartite organization, with a central pavilion joined by wings to projecting corner sections. The roofline had a sculpted parapet, similar to Mission Revival Style contemporaries but its ornamentation was not Mission in character.

Demolished

The Administration Building was razed in 1938.
