In 1951, the United States Navy obtained the Hotel Del Monte #3 and relocated its Naval Postgraduate School there from Annapolis, MD. Around the Hotel Del Monte #3, the Navy began to erect other buildings to form a campus.

Languages among other topics, were taught at this advanced school. The American Institute of Architects named the United States Navy, Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA, a Merit Award recipient in 1955 for Civic Buildings;
