Tatsuya Kawabata began the tradition of lavish Christmas decoration in this cul-de-sac during late 1940s or early 1950s. Kawabata returned from an internment camp during World War II, and to demonstrate his goodwill toward his neighbors, he created a lavish ornamental display around his house. Others in the neighborhood responded, until it became known as "Candy Cane Lane," a Christmas attraction for families.
